May is National Traffic Safety Month and the Montclair Police Department Traffic Division and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) will host a Picnic in the Park for Safety for Montclair High School students to be held Thursday, May 19, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Heningberg Field (Midland Avenue, across from Montclair High School Gym). The program is being held to help raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving.
Members of the township Fire and Police departments and the Montclair Ambulance Unit will stage a live extrication and rescue demonstration. The demonstration will begin at 11:30 a.m. and will take place on Midland Avenue.
There will be a “SIDNE” (Simulated Impaired Driving Experience) DWI Go Kart in the High School Main Gym, DWI Goggles, music and free snacks and water. Attendees will be provided with safety information from the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety, the Nikhil Badlani Foundation and the Brain Injury Alliance. The Motor Vehicle Commission will also have Graduated Drive License (GDL) information available.
Participants we be encouraged to sign up for a seat belt race to win a trophy.
The event is made possible with generous support from Montclair PBA Local #53 and DCH Montclair Acura. Roach’s Towing Service will provide the vehicle to be used in the extrication and rescue demonstration.
